Sam Martin 2013 5th Round Pick - Detroit Lions

Sam Martin - Appalachian State University
Punter / Kickoff Specialists
2013 College Senior Combine Specialist
Detroit Lions 5th Round Pick
Punter / Kickoff Specialists, Sam Martin (Appalachian State)
Congrats to Appalachian State Punter / Kickoff Specialists, Sam Martin for being drafted in the 5th Round by the Detroit Lions.  In my opinion Sam was in the top two combination Punter / Kickoff Specialists in this years 2013 Draft.

He was also one of 27 punters and 73 kicking specialists that attended Coach Zauner's 2013 College Senior Combine, held March 1-3, 2013 in Gilbert, Arizona.
Sam Martin, Nose Down Drop
Coach Zauner's College Senior Combine is producing results for specialists in smaller division schools.  In the 2012 NFL Draft, John Potter (Western Michigan) was Drafted in the 7th Round by the Buffalo Bills.  In this years 2013 NFL Draft it was Sam Martin (Appalachian State University).

Appalachian State University and Western Michigan are two smaller division football schools however, specialists are getting the exposure the deserve and need from my combines.

Coach Zauner's College Senior Combine has become a "Field of Dreams" for several college senior kicking specialists. Some have been drafted and others have signed Free Agent Contracts.  The key is to get the EXPOSURE they want, need and deserve and get into a NFL training camp to compete for a starting job.

The goal of Coach Zauner, LLC and the College Senior Combine is to get any college senior kicking specialists that has NFL potential and was NOT invited to the NFL Combine exposure.

I believe that because I have coached, trained and consulted 22 PRO Bowl and over 95 NFL kicking specialists NFL Special Teams Coaches and Directors of Personnel take notice of the lists, information and videos I gather.

The system is working and I hope it continues to work for the upcoming kicking specialists around the country that have the dream of one day playing in the NFL.  And most hard working specialists say they just want a chance.

Coach Zauner's College Senior and Free Agent Combines are giving kicking specialists the chance they want and deserve as long as they are performing at a high level.

Sam Martin Explodes Up & Through The Ball
Sam Martin Explodes Kickoffs High & Far
This year Sam Martin was drafted and Congrats to him.  Also, several other players that attended my 2013 College Senior Combine have called informing me of signing Free Agent Contracts.  Punters:
Tress Way (U. of Oklahoma) Bears and Ryan Doerr (Kansas State University) Broncos  Snappers:  Kevin McDermott (UCLA) 49ers and Jorgen Hus (U. of Regina) Rams.

And I hope there will be more to come.

Sam Martin was one of the 16 specialists I recommended to NFL Special Teams Coordinators and so were Tress Way, Ryan Doerr, Kevin McDermott and Jorgen Hus.  As a kicking coach and teacher it is very gratifying to know that what you are doing is having a positive impact on people you are working with and for.

At the 2013 Kicking Combine Sam demonstrated why he was one of the top two punter / kickoff specialists in this years draft.  Sam was a late entry to my Combine this year and I believe he is pleased that he attended.

Drew Butler Steelers Punter

Drew Butler Makes Pittsburgh Steelers Final Roster
Drew Butler Rookie Free Agent With The Pittsburgh Steelers
It has been said that playing a professional sport is not easy. Playing in the NFL is a feat not many can claim to have accomplished, and being one of 253 players selected in the NFL Draft is even more rare. It shows the NFL teams investment and confidence in the player's ability to perform as well as his character.

Teams expect their draft picks to challenge incumbent starters and show why they were chosen over the thousands of other college football players around the country. It's never easy, but being a draft pick can take an awful lot of weight off ones shoulders plus put some good money in their pockets.  However, their is no guarantee of making an NFL roster just because you're drafted.

The other way to make an NFL roster is to be an undrafted free agent. There are times when free agents come in and make an immediate impact on the team, but generally speaking most are used to fill roster spots and are in training camp to give looks to first and second string veteran players. More often than not, kickers, punters and snappers are forced to make their case as a free agent, and it can be a tough and difficult road.

In 2009, redshirt sophomore Drew Butler was vying for the starting punter position at the University of Georgia. Upon being named the starter, Drew stormed through the season averaging a career high 48 yards while sending 24 punts over 50 yards. His performances garnered him the 2009 Ray Guy Award as the nations top collegiate punter.

Drew continued his dominance earning countless awards such as being an All-American, an All-Conference player, an Academic All-American and a team captain. Drew topped his storied career off being invited to the 2012 Senior Bowl and NFL Combine.

During the 2012 NFL Combine, Drew had a excellent workout and from my understanding, very impressive interviews with NFL Coaches and Scouts. Despite having one of the most prolific punting careers in college football as well as great work ethic and brains to boot, Drew's phone never rang during the 2012 NFL Draft.

The waiting game began, but it didn't take long. The phone began to ring soon after the draft, and Drew along with his family and agent Derek Gilmore decided that Pittsburgh was the best place for him. I told Drew that was a great choice. Starter Daniel Sepulveda had been released due to his unfortunate knee injuries and the Steelers were looking for the next punter to take over the starting role.
Drew Butler (Pittsburgh Steelers) in 2012 Training Camp
As Drew worked through mini-camp and training camp, he was awarded playing time during the preseason and showed why he was the best candidate for the job. During the final cuts, Drew was told that he had made the team and will be the starting punter in week 1 against the Denver Broncos.

His dream was fulfilled, and he was going to be an NFL punter and will finally play on Sundays. However, as a NFL Rookie he still needs to prove everyday and every game why he still belongs. The NFL is a tough league to sustain a career as a coach and player, but I have a feeling Drew is very familiar with that and he will surely love living his dream.

'A Specialist's Path To PRO Football'
Here is Drew Butler's Path

In 1992 Coach Zauner Coaching Kevin Butler As Kicking Consultant
For Chicago Bears Head Coach Mike Ditka
Upon finishing my college coaching career, I decided to open up my own consulting business in the early 90's. During this time, several Hall of Fame NFL Head Coaches used my kicking consulting services. The list included: Dick Vermeil, Dan Reeves, Marty Schottenheimer, Tom Flores, George Seifert and Mike Ditka. When Coach Ditka brought me into Chicago to work with their special teams coach and specialists, the punter was Chris Gardocki and the kicker was Kevin Butler. Kevin was an excellent kicker especially while kicking in the cold and windy city of Chicago at Soldier Field.  Kevin and I got along very well and established a lasting friendship that we even maintained during the years he was playing for the Chicago Bears and I was coaching for the Minnesota Vikings.

In March of 2009, Kevin first brought his son Drew to Phoenix, Arizona for his first One on One Punting Lesson. Drew was a redshirt sophomore at the time and was working to be the team's starting punter.   Kevin called me because he wanted another set of eyes to look at Drew, so they decided to fly  to Phoenix for my evaluation and opinion.

Kevin also stated that coaching your own son is not the easiest task as a father.  These are basically the same comments I received from all-time kicking greats Gary Anderson and Jeff Feagles when they also brought their sons to Phoenix for One on One Kicking and Punting Lessons.  Gary kicked for 24 years and Jeff punted for 22 Years in the NFL.
Kevin Butler Brings Son Drew Butler To Scottsdale, Arizona in March of 2009
For  His First One on One Punting Lesson
After just 3 days of lessons, I looked at Drew and said, "If you continue to stay focused on everything we work on during our punting lessons, I believe in four years you will be playing football on Sundays like your dad." Drew was speechless as his jaw dropped. After pausing a moment, he gathered his thoughts and said, "Coach, I just want to be the starting punter at Georgia right now".

Drew showed to me that he had talent and potential, but there were a few punting fundamentals that he needed to work on to become a better all-around and consistent punter.  I felt that Drew needed to first change his grip and drop because he had too many nose up drops, and secondly he needed to punt up and through the ball better.  Drew had what I call a jack knife crunch.

I introduced Drew, as I do all specialists, to what I call Coach Zauner's 'Natural Style of Kicking and Punting'.  Drew loved it, embraced it, and has worked very hard to be very successful with it.
Drew Butler (U. of Georgia) Wins 2009 Ray Guy Award
Not only did Drew win the starting job for the Georgia Bulldogs, he won the 2009 Ray Guy Award! This honor is given to the nations top collegiate punter each year. Drew had the highest punting average in the country with 48.1 yards per punt, and had the highest NCAA average since 2001. Not only was he an All-American punter, he was also named to the to the SEC Athletic Director's Honor Roll as well as Georgia's Dean's List.

Bring Their Sons Drew and CJ To Scottsdale, Arizona For One on One Punting Lessons
In July of 2009, Drew attended my PRO Development Camp at Macalester College in Minnesota, and for the next two years he continued coming to Arizona and Milwaukee during spring and summertime attending One on One Punting Lessons. In each session, it was evident that he was maturing physically and mentally while maintaining his punting techniques to back up his reputation as one of the nation's top college punters.

Drew was improving every year.  Not only as an open field punter but directionally and was starting to perfect the Aussie drop punt technique in pooch punt territory.  He had become an excellent holder and a valuable asset to his team. Drew has been coached by me on technique but more importantly by his father on how to be a 'Pros Pro'.
Coach Zauner Attends Drew Butler's Last Game As A Georgia Bull Dog
Drew had an outstanding college career; Michelle and I were honored to be invited to the University of Georgia's Senior Day. It was a very heartwarming event and I was proud to be there for his last home game where he also showed a good display on the field.

As I mentioned earlier, Drew was an Academic All-American, and knowing that football is not the only path in life can relieve a lot of pressure while on the gridiron. He was playing his cards right and knew that he had the ability to give the NFL a shot, and if things didn't work out he could easily pursue a different career.

One of Drew's secret weapons was his 'master plan'. Due to his redshirt giving him an extra year enrolled in school, he was able to play his senior season at Georgia while working on finishing his Master's Degree. After Drew's last college football game, The Outback Bowl, he moved to the Phoenix area to start offseason training similar to several other high profile college seniors preparing for the NFL Combine and Draft.  While Drew was training during January and February on his punting technique, he continued to gain confidence and improve each day. I told Drew that what separates an NFL punter from a great college punter is not always leg strength or how far you can hit a ball, but its about consistency and eliminating bad days, not just bad punts. Drew understood that concept and each session was better than the last.

Drew's 'master plan' was working out perfectly.

After a couple of weeks of One on One Punting Lessons in January Drew headed to Mobile, Alabama for the 2012 Senior Bowl Game, and I was right behind him.
Coach Zauner With Drew Butler and Randy Bullock at 2012 Senior Bowl
Every year in January, I attend the Senior Bowl and have for quite some time now. It's a time when I get to catch up with many of my old NFL coaching friends, network with NFL Special Teams Coordinators and Head Coaches, and evaluate the new draft class of kicking specialists. As a kicking coach this year's 2012 Senior Bowl was very special. Drew along with two other long time One on One Students, Randy Bullock (Texas A & M) and Brad Nortman (University of Wisconsin), were also invited.

I got to watch all three young men practice and spent some quality time with them.  They each had a good week and performed well in the game which helped to improve their draft stock.
Drew Butler (Steelers), Randy Bullock (Texans) and Brad Nortman (Panthers)
Drew Butler (Georgia & Steelers) and Randy Bullock (Texas A & M and Texans)
After the Senior Bowl Game, Drew headed back to Phoenix for more punting lessons to prepare for the NFL Combine.  Several other specialist's also arrived for One on One Kicking, Punting and Snapping Lessons and NFL Combine training.  They included Randy Bullock (Texans), Brad Nortman (Panthers), Carson Wiggs (Seahawks), Kyle Martens (Chargers), and Beau Brinkley (Titans).

My plan was to create an environment in Phoenix during January and February for the best kicking specialists to train and prepare for the NFL combine.  February was a busy month, not only for me but also for Drew.  Drew got extra work in catching punt snaps from snappers and holding for various kickers.

Drew and the other kicking specialists took a short hiatus to visit home only to turn around and immediately fly to Indianapolis for the NFL Combine in late February.

In addition to traveling to the Senior Bowl each year, I have also attend the NFL Combine to continue evaluating and networking. Like the Senior Bowl, the NFL Combine was very special to me this year as five of my specialist's were showcasing their talents in Indy.

The NFL Combine can be very overwhelming for even the most experienced and high profile football players in the country. Each and every individual is constantly under a microscope and the intensity can make or break a player in just the few days they are there. Not only are coaches looking at ability and talent on the field, but each player is also put through an interview process that can be long and tedious. NFL Teams want to know just about everything about you whether it's your family, girlfriend/wife, school, or your life story.  It is a very long and intense process to say the least.

Drew passed the NFL combine tests with flying colors. Not only did Drew perform well on the field, but what I heard from several NFL Special Teams Coordinators he also interviewed extremely well.
Drew's dad is familiar with how the NFL works, he did a very good job of preparing Drew of what to expect and how to keep a calm demeanor. Drew had no problem answering questions and saying all the right things.
Drew Butler Trains For Two Months in Phoenix, AZ For 2012 NFL Combine
Even after competing at the NFL Combine, Drew knew that his training wasn't even close to being over.  He still had Georgia's Pro Day and numerous private workouts with NFL Special Teams Coordinators. Drew continued punting for another four days in Phoenix to help him prepare for his Pro Day back in Georgia. A true professional never quits training, and if you want to play in the NFL you have to have that mentality.

2012 NFL Draft in April - Drew Signs Free Agent Contract With Steelers

When everything had taken place and the NFL Draft was about to start, Drew was feeling confident about his chances of being selected in one of the later rounds because of his feedback he had received from workouts and interviews with NFL Coaches. Despite these positives, it is still the NFL Draft and anything can happen. Teams have a limited number of draft picks and may not want to spend them on a kicking specialist.

As the later rounds came and went, Drew received no phone call. He was a little let down but was prepared for that possibility, and was looking forward to the next step, which was working to get signed as an undrafted free agent .

I would also like to note that during this process I mentioned to Drew that at times it is not always in your best interests to be drafted. By signing a free agent contract, you have more flexibility in your decision on where to play and make the best possibility to make the final roster. It doesn't matter whether your drafted or not, you still have to beat somebody out and Drew was up for the challenge.

Shortly after the draft had ended, Drew and his agent, Derek Gilmore, were in contact with several teams about the possibility of signing a contract. After discussions had taken place, they decided that Pittsburgh was the best place to start his career. The Steelers had said he would compete with veteran punter Jeremy Kapinos for the starting position. I felt Drew and his agent made the right choice.

Drew Prepares For First Training Camp in July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
After Drew completed his May and June mini-camps, he decided to take another One on One Punting Lesson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to further prepare himself for training camp.  Like previous summers, Drew had always finished his training in Milwaukee and this year was no different.

When Drew returned to Pittsburgh, training camp started and it was time to shine. Due to an injury to Kapinos, Drew handled the punting duties for the first preseason game, and while it wasn't his best performance he showed that he was able to handle the pressures and still punted well. After it was all said and done, Drew started every preseason game, made the final roster cuts, and was named as the teams starting punter. He had finally done it, he was living his dream of finally playing on Sunday's.

Drew was very well aware of what it would take to complete 'A Specialist's Path to PRO Football', and he was willing to make the sacrifices to take that path. I always say, "you should plan your work and work your plan", and Drew worked it to perfection. Yes, without the people around him, it would have been much tougher, but Drew's planning, determination, work ethic, personality, and passion have taken him to where he is today.

Drew's parents Kevin and Kathy could not have raised a better son. By giving Drew their undying love and support in anything that he put his mind to, they showed their will for him to succeed and grow into the person he is today. They have so much to be proud of and I am honored to consider their family close friends.

Good luck to Drew and his Pittsburgh Steeler teammates and I hope to see you play again in person soon!

Side Note:  In the past four plus years Drew and I have had some a very competitive golf matches after our One on One Training Sessions. I have enjoyed not only coaching Drew but competing head to head on the links as well.  Collecting the $1.00 bet was always a highlight of my day!

Graham, Malone, Overton and Waters Make Final NFL and CFL Rosters

Coach Zauner's 2012 Free Agent Specialist's Combine
'A Specialist's Path To PRO Football'

Shayne Graham Makes Houston Texans Roster
Robert Malone Signs With S.D. Chargers & Makes N.Y Jets Roster
Matt Overton Makes Indianapolis Colts Roster
Swayze Waters Signs With NY Jets & Makes Toronto Argonauts Roster
Coach Zauner's 'Field Of Dreams' Draws Top Free Agent Specialists
Attended By Several NFL Special Teams Coaches & Directors Of Pro Personnel
While Coach Zauner's Third Annual College Senior Kicking Specialist's Combine produced NFL starting roster spots for Beau Brinkley (Titans), Johnny Hekker (Rams) and John Potter (Bills), the Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine has continued having success by yielding four more roster spots in PRO football.

Coach Zauner's Fourth Annual Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine also paid dividends and got exposure for NFL Veteran Specialists Shayne Graham (Texans) and Robert Malone (Jets).  While new comers Matt Overton (Colts) and Swayze Waters (Argonauts) also benefited from Coach Zauner's Programs: College Senior and Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combines, PRO Development Camps and One on One Kicking, Punting and Snapping Lessons.

Free Agent Kicking Combine Offers Great Opportunity To Specialists Looking For Exposure to NFL, CFL or UFL Teams
The Proof Is In The Results of Players
Throughout the past four years of the Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine, I have always fielded a talent pool of where I felt confident each specialists was capable of making an NFL roster. It is for this reason that I give all the praise for success to the individuals that compete in this event. NFL coaches and scouts don't fly across the country for just any Combine, they continue to come each year because they know that a group of the elite free agent kickers, punters, and snappers in the country will be competing with each other to earn their way into the NFL, or in some cases back into the NFL.

Shayne Graham - 11 Year Veteran NFL Kicker

At the beginning of the 2011 NFL season, Shayne Graham found himself looking for a job after being waived by the Cowboys and Redskins during training camps. Shayne had contacted me earlier in the spring prior to our initial meeting, expressing interest in doing a One on One Kicking Lesson. As he was still looking for an NFL team to call his 'home' again, I reached out to Shayne offering my services. Ultimately, Shayne felt it was best to have another set of eyes to take another look at his field goals, while working  to refine and improve his kickoff technique.
Shayne Graham Works On Field Goal & Kickoff Technique
During Kicking Lessons Phoenix, Arizona - 2011
When I first started to watch Shayne kick, it was obvious to me why he had sustained an 11 year career in the NFL. When working with NFL veterans, you always have to bear in mind that they are professionals for a reason, and as the old saying goes, 'If it isn't broke, don't fix it'.

During our time spent together during his kicking lessons, I had Shayne try a few minor changes in his kicking technique and we were seeing better results in his kickoffs by the time he left. I felt that Shayne would definitely be kicking in the NFL again.

Shayne Graham Shows NFL Coaches He Wants A Starting Job!
In February of 2012, Shane and fellow veteran Jeff Reed stated that if they were not on a current roster, the best opportunity for them to make their way back into the NFL was to find a venue so that they could showcase themselves in front of several NFL coaches and scouts. Coach Zauner's 2012 Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine is exactly the venue they had in mind.

The NFL is a business of what you can do at the current moment, and as previous experience can be a great benefactor, Shayne knew that coaches would want to see where he currently stands as a kicker. Shayne had a great day of kicking off sending 3 of his 4 kickoffs out of the end zone while also going perfect in field goals making it to the bonus round.

Shayne Graham Makes Final Roster With Houston Texans
After the Houston Texans selected kicker Randy Bullock in the 5th round of the 2012 NFL Draft, who is another kicker with an extensive background untilizing my services offered as a kicking coach, they felt that finding a veteran to compete with him was the best way to find their starter. Unfortunately, Randy suffered a torn groin during preseason and was put on the IR list. Luckily, the Texans felt that Shayne was more than capable of getting the job done and he was named the teams starter. I would like to wish Shayne great success this season and look forward to continuing our relationship.

Robert Malone - 2 Year Veteran Punter

Another NFL veteran that competed in the 2012 Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine was former Fresno State standout Robert Malone. After spending the majority of the 2010 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Robert was looking for an opportunity to make an NFL roster again. His agent, Jill Baxter who's other clients have seen success with Coach Zauner Programs, recommended that Robert attend the combine to get experience and exposure alike.
Robert Malone (Fresno State) Catches The Eye Of Several NFL Teams

Prior to the combine, I had never previously worked with Robert, however I was familiar with his reputation and ability, which made him an obvious choice to perform in front of NFL coaches. I had however worked extensively with his cousin Tom Malone, and believed if they were anything alike, Robert would be more than a capable NFL punter.
Robert Malone Holds For Former Fresno State Teammate Clint Stitser
Robert Malone (Fresno State), was also taking all of the right steps by competing in this Kicking Combine and other events such as the NFL Regional Combines in order to get more exposure. Below,  listen to Robert's testimonial about Coach Zauner's 2012 Free Agent Specialist's Combine.

Malone Signs With Chargers After 2012 Combine. Gets Cut And Makes Jets Final Roster
After the Combine, Robert was brought in for a workout by the New York Jets, but he did not sign with them immediately. Instead, Robert was signed by the San Diego Chargers for the preseason and was then cut after the last game. Robert felt that his performances were enough to earn a starting job even though he found himself still searching for an NFL team. When everyone thought the Jets were done making their final roster cuts, they decided to make one more move. In a surprise move, the Jets then cut incumbent starter T.J. Conley in favor of signing Robert to be the starting punter.

I would like to stress again that Coach Zauner's Free Agent Specialist's Combine is not just meant to help young men on 'A Specialist's Path to PRO Football', but designed to help anyone that is currently on that path whether they are a NFL veteran of a decade or a rookie looking to break into the league. It is a platform that was created to expand the opportunities of any kicking specialist with talent and give them a chance to show case their skills in front of NFL coaches and scouts.

Matt Overton - UFL Florida Tuskers and Omaha Nighthawks.

In the previous four years, Matt Overton has used Coach Zauner's One on One Snapping Lessons, PRO Development Camps & Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine to refine his snapping technique and receive NFL and UFL exposure.

In 2009, I had the pleasure of meeting long snapper Matt Overton of Western Washington University. Now, before I speak about Matt, I would first like to mention that his desire to play professional football has put him in the position he is in today. Matt would constantly send me updates of his snapping techniques and videos while also calling to get my opinion and approval.

As Matt and I were talking one afternoon he even apologized about being so direct and enthusiastic about becoming a better snapper. I immediately told him to never apologize for trying to maximize his abilities and that and I wanted him to continue to send me film while I would try my very best to offer him an opportunity to live his dream.

Matt Overton One on One Long Snapping Lesson - 2009
Matt contacted me in 2009 because he was interested in receiving some One on One Snapping Lessons. He had previous experience of being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks and played a season in the AFL2. During his snapping lesson, he showed that he could be a very good snapper, but still needed more technique work and more consistency. Matt followed up his lessons with attending my inaugural Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine. Matt competed well at the event and was then signed by the Florida Tuskers for the inaugraul UFL season.

After Matt's season with the Tuskers, he returned again to the Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine to showcase his skills. Following the Kicking Combine, Matt was again signed by the Seahawks, but was subsequently released. Matt then signed with the UFL Omaha Nighthawks, but his desire to play in the NFL still burned inside. He then returned to Phoenix again to attend my 2011 January PRO Development Camp for Punters and Snappers. Each time that I had the pleasure of working with Matt, his passion of being a great long snapper showed as he always returned more consistent and in better shape.

Matt Overton At 2012 Free Agent Kicking Combine Demonstrating Coverage Skills
This past spring, Matt was back yet again competing in the Free Agent Kicking Combine looking to find his home in the NFL, and hopefully it was his last trip. Matt showed again his work ethic and enthusiasm as his intensity to compete was at an all time high.

Impressed with his all around ability, the Indianapolis Colts brought Matt in for a tryout after the Combine and subsequently signed him to a free agent contract as he beat out incumbent starter Justin Snow during the training camp's final roster cuts.

Matt is a prime example of a young man who's passion and determination has earned him the right to call himself an NFL long snapper. This personal drive will help Matt overcome any obstacle that life has to throw at him and he will always succeed. Good luck to Matt and may he continue to live his dream!

Matt Overton Makes 2012 Colts Final Roster
Swayze Waters - Free Agent Raiders, Steelers and Jets

Each of these young men have their own unique 'Specialist's Path to PRO Football' and Swayze Waters (University of Alabama Birmingham) is no different. Swayze came to me after being cut by the Detroit Lions in the 2009 season. Trying to stay involved in football, he traveled to Phoenix for the Free Agent Combine Evaluations. Swayze is a dual punter and kicker and I felt that he had the potential to make a career as a specialist in PRO football.
Swayze Waters Working on Technique During a One on One Punting and Kicking Lesson
After competing in the 2010 Kicking Combine, Swayze was signed by the Oakland Raiders. As much as they were impressed with his talents, they felt that Swayze still needed to develop more and refine some techniques to become a more consistent punter/kicker.

This led Swayze to return to Phoenix where I introduced him to Coach Zauner's Natural Style of Kicking and Punting during his One on One Kicking and Punting Lessons. He was very attentive and liked the changes. He worked hard to master the new technique and realized that it would take some time to acquire the new muscle memory but knew it the long run it would be well worth it.

As a result of attending his second Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine, Swayze was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers because his ability to effectively kick and punt. Unfortunately, Swayze was cut again leaving him in search of a job in the NFL.

Colts, Dolphins And Broncos Coaches Evaluate Swayze Waters Potential
It was about this time that I had mentioned to Swayze about the possibility of playing in the Canadian Football League (CFL). As he entertained the idea, I stressed to him the importance of dual kickers and punters in the CFL and that teams would be more than happy to have someone of his ability on their roster. Because he had not been able to remain on a roster long enough to gather any statistics, I felt that he needed to add to his football resume and the CFL could be the perfect place to start.

At the 2012 Free Agent Specialist's Kicking Combine, Swayze was again turning heads of teams, notably Toronto Argonauts special teams coach, Mike O'Shea. However, because CFL teams were still under the impression Swayze was set on playing in the NFL, Mike did not pursue him immediately.

During the 2012 NFL Draft, Swayze was then signed by the New York Jets who felt that he could compete to win the starting kicking job during the off season. No more than a week later, Swayze was informed that the Jets had signed kicker Josh Brown and would no longer require his services. Swayze called me in shock, as he picked the Jets over three other teams because he felt they would offer him the best chance to compete.

Swayze holds his religion very close to him, and it helps drive him day in and day out. Ultimately, he accepted his situation and feels that each of us has a plan. Sometimes when bad things happen, they happen for a reason.
Swayze Waters Caught The Eye of The CFL (Canadian Football League) Coaches
Due To His Ability To Punt, Kick Field Goals and Kickoff
With most NFL rostered filled in May it was very quiet on the NFL front, Swayze felt that indeed trying to play in the CFL held the best chance for him to play PRO football, and create another path to play in the NFL. Swayze was then brought in by the Edmonton Eskimos to compete for a spot on their roster. He immediately impressed the coaching staff, however bad luck came again because of the CFL import/non-import rule. Swayze was then released due to simple roster numbers.

Luckily, Coach O'Shea caught wind of Swayze's availability and promptly flew him to Toronto for a tryout. O'Shea had remembered Swayze from his performance at the Free Agent Kicking Combine and after an injury to their long time CFL kicking specialist Noel Prefontaine, he was ecstatic for the opportunity to have Swayze on the Argonauts team.

Swayze Waters Playing in 2012 For Toronto Argonauts
Swayze's path has led him to the CFL, but his pursuit of an NFL career has not yet been completed. I know that Swayze will continue to succeed and I hope that one day he will achieve his dream of playing in the NFL. His path will be similar to those who have made the transition from the CFL to the NFL such as Mike Vanderjagt (Colts), Shawn Suisham (Steelers) and Jon Ryan (Seahawks). I wish him the best of luck, and look forward to seeing where his future takes him.

'A Specialist's Path to PRO Football' is a path that is in the eye of the beholder. Whether it is playing in the NFL, CFL, UFL or AFL, each kicking specialist deserves their chance to follow that path. There are obstacles in life that these young men and many others have overcome and have yet still to meet. It's those with the passion, drive, work ethic and ability to fight back when everyone else says 'NO' that sets them apart.

I thrive on the role of a kicking coaching because of success stories like these and the satisfaction of helping specialists find their own path and conquering it! I'm glad to see that Coach Zauner, LLC Programs are working, but as I say, 'Coaches Coach and Players Play'.

Brinkley, Hekker & Potter Make NFL Rosters

Snapper - Beau Brinkley (University of Missouri) Tennessee Titans
Punter - Johnny Hekker (Oregon State University) St. Louis Rams
Kicker - John Potter (Western Michigan University) Buffalo Bills

When I first decided to start my College Senior and Free Agent Specialist's Combines, my soul purpose was to create a venue that was composed of the best young specialists in the country and give them another opportunity for NFL exposure. I felt a well organized event, my NFL contacts and ability to evaluate talent, would yield several specialist's reaching their dream of playing in the NFL.

So far, that dream has come true for several specialists who have attended Coach Zauner, LLC Combines including this year's College Senior Combine attendees Beau Brinkley (Tennessee Titans), Johnny Hekker (St. Louis Rams), and John Potter (Buffalo Bills). Each of these specialists have their own 'Specialist's Path to PRO Football' and I would like to share them with you.

Beau Brinkley - Snapper University of Missouri and Tennessee Titans
Beau Brinkley - One on One Snapping Lesson In Phoenix, AZ
When I first met Beau, he had just finished his senior season at the University of Missouri, and was aspiring to continue playing football into the NFL. His father, Mike, like Beau, also handled long snapping duties during his playing days at Missouri Valley College. He knew that in order for Beau to reach his dream, that he would need not only an expert to evaluate Beau, but also another avenue to gain exposure for him.

Beau Brinkley - 2012 January PRO Development Kicking Camp
Beau first attended my PRO Development Kicking Camp for punters and snappers in January of 2012 where we worked on retooling and refining technique as well as snapping a crisp ball with more consistency. Beau was a true believer in the Coach Zauner philosophy and opted to return to Phoenix for One on One Snapping Lessons and attended my 2012 College Senior Specialist's Kicking Combine.

Being a little undersized for most NFL snappers today, Beau knew that having passion, a no nonsense attitude and being a consistent snapper could make up for his size as long as he got an opportunity to compete with the best. While under pressure of the combine he had a very good day snapping, blocking and covering, but we both knew it wasn't his best performance. The biggest thing that I look for when evaluating NFL potential is not one particular workout, but how they perform day in and day out. I am very familiar with NFL coaches expectations and felt that Beau was capable of meeting them.

Beau Brinkley Competes At 2012 College Senior Specialist's Kicking Combine
Beau is the kind of athlete that loves to be the underdog, and has always had to prove himself to earn what was given to him. He was recruited by Missouri as a preferred walk-on and won the starting job by the beginning of his freshman season. Beau caught the eyes of Tennessee Titans Special Teams Coach Alan Lowry not only because of his snapping ability, but because of his athleticism and competitive drive. Beau possesses all of the intangibles that an NFL coach looks for and during our One on One Snapping Lessons him I found him extremely coachable.

When Beau signed a free agent contract with the Titans, he knew like in college he was a rookie and would have to prove himself all over again, which is just the environment that he thrives in. Playing in the NFL was also a big transition for Beau because the increased importance of blocking after the snap, which is something that Titan's coaches mentioned they were keeping an eye on in an interview I had read.

Last week, Beau made the final roster cuts and was named the starting snapper for the Titans, finally achieving the dream that he has worked so hard for. I know that Beau will only continue to improve with his dedicated work ethic and he has truly earned the right to call himself an NFL long snapper.

Johnny Hekker - Punter Oregon State University and St. Louis Rams

Punters - Johnny Hekker (Oregon State U.) and Dawson Zimmerman (Clemson U.)
Another specialist that benefited from Coach Zauner's College Senior Specialist's Combine was Oregon State punter Johnny Hekker. I was already familiar with Johnny and his ability to punt prior to the Combine and had extended him an invitation to compete. Johnny had a reputation for having a big leg in college, and when I first met him, his 6'5" and 230 pound frame made it obvious to me why he had that reputation.

A professional colleague, agent Paul Sheehy from ProStar Sports Agency, discussed with Johnny the benefits competing in the Combine, because he was confident Johnny would get my endorsement and more NFL exposure. Paul had seen success with other clients attending Coach Zauner, LLC programs and taking One on One Lessons such as NFL Kicking Specialists Billy Cundiff, Rian Lindell, and Dave Rayner.
Johnny Hekker (Oregon State U.) Produces Big Punts At College Senior Specialist's Kicking Combine
Johnny had a very successful career at Oregon State U. averaging over 41 yards during his 50 game career, however there were inconsistencies with his punting that showed. Oregon State U., like several college teams today, not only run a traditional punt formation, but also included rugby style kicking into their game plan.

A side note. I first instituted the rugby style punt during my time coaching at San Diego State University in the 80's. It was designed as a gimmick play and I feel that if used too often it can hinder the ability to develop as a traditional style punter and can hide true NFL potential.

Johnny punted well at my College Senior Specialist's Combine by hitting some long distance punts with excellent hang times. However, in my opinion as a kicking coach, he showed that he still needed to work certain fundamentals to become more consistent and make a NFL roster. However, he definitely had NFL potential.

After the combine was finished I sent out final stats and DVDs to every NFL Special Teams Coordinator and Director of Pro Personnel and College Scouting. Several coaches contacted me about various specialists. My former assistant John Fassel who is now the St. Louis Rams Special Teams Coordinator had expressed interest in Johnny after traveling the country in search of a punter. In an article I read, Coach Fassel said that he felt John's rugby punting took away from his development as a traditional punter, but he knew that being able to concentrate on one craft would make him an NFL caliber specialist.  I would agree with his assessment.

After competing for the starting job throughout the summer, Johnny has finally been awarded the starting punting job for the St. Louis Rams. I know Johnny has the ability to sustain a career in the NFL and will keep improving to see that it happens. I wish the best of luck for him and look forward to having another opportunity to work with him in the future.

John Potter - Kicker Western Michigan University and Buffalo Bills

John Potter (Western Michigan University) During Field Goal Competition
Another talented specialist that benefited from the College Senior Specialist's Combine was Western Michigan University kicker John Potter. John was brought to my attention by fellow kicking coach Jamie Kohl and John's agent John Perla, who I'm both familiar with from the Wisconsin area. They felt it would be a good idea for John to compete to showcase his skills and gain more exposure through the combine.

Whenever I work with a new kicker, I like to do a little research on them to get a better feeling of their kicking ability and background. What I learned was that John was not only a very good kicker in college, but he is also a very gifted athlete. Being a standout dual athlete in high school by competing in both football and track, he showed his athleticism by breaking a Western Michigan U. record for tackles by a kicker with 36! Oh, and his 36 touchbacks from the 30-yard line his senior season weren't too shabby either.
John Potter Catches Everyone's Eyes With Booming Kickoffs
After John's first two kickoffs, it was evident he had an NFL leg as both sailed eight and 16 yards past the end zone, while also displaying good technique. John was also able to show his potential kicking field goals as well, however I noted to him that when he was kicking further back, he changed his form when he didn't need to. Although he didn't make it to the finals of the competition, I wasn't deterred from recommending him to NFL coaches. After the combine, I was still very confident that John would find himself in an NFL training camp fighting for a position this year.

The 2012 NFL Draft came and the Buffalo Bills selected John Potter in the 7th round! The Bills were impressed with his leg strength and ability to make a tackle down field. They also felt that playing under NFL veteran Rian Lindell would help him further develop as a field goal kicker in the future. During the NFL preseason John went 11 of 13 in touchbacks on kickoffs, which was placed him among the league leaders.

While making final roster cuts, Buffalo did something that most teams shy away from today because of the 53 man roster limit. They decided to keep both kickers on their roster with Rian Lindell handling field goal duties while John was rewarded kickoffs. In a game of field position and strategy, having almost every kick as a touchback can make things a lot easier on a defense.

John has earned his place in the NFL and I feel that he will continue to improve as a kicker to one day handle all of the kicking duties for his team. I wish him nothing but the best and I am looking forward to having the opportunity to work with him again.

Coach Zauner's College Senior Specialist's Combines has also produced results for several other young specialists that dreamed of playing in the NFL. Current NFL players such as Morgan Cox (Baltimore Ravens), Christian Yount (Cleveland Browns) and Justin Drescher (New Orleans Saints) all showcased their skills here in Phoenix, AZ. In addition, several other specialists were given opportunities to pursue their dream of playing in the NFL because of their performances at the College Senior Specialist's Combine.

'A Specialist's Path to PRO Football' is not always an easy one and each specialist's path is different. I feel that each and every specialist deserves their chance to prove themselves on the field and I will always try to make sure that they have that chance with my College Senior and Free Agent Specialist's Combines. These young men deserve all of the credit because like I always say, 'Coaches Coach and Players Play'.
