49ers' David Akers' Kicking Trials

As a longtime NFL special-teams coach and kicking consultant, Gary Zauner learned the path of a kicker's missed field-goal tries can offer a window to his psyche.

The 49ersDavid Akers is a left-footed kicker who keeps pushing field-goal attempts to the left. Zauner's analysis: Akers' problem could have more to do with his head than his leg.

"Pushing it left could be because he's getting a little tentative," Zauner said. "That's what happens with guys that usually push the ball. They're so worried about missing that they don't kick it like they do in practice because the brain gets involved in the kick.

"Generally speaking, most kickers that have missed big kicks a lot of times just block them out and don't finish the kick."

Kicking Clinic at Tucson’s Kino Stadium

Gary Zauner to hold special teams and kicking clinic at Tucson’s Kino Stadium

Former NFL coach Gary Zauner is holding a special teams and kicking clinic at Kino Stadium on Monday, January 7 from 2–3:30 p.m.

Zauner will be instructing players getting ready for the Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game. Fans and youth players are welcome to observe the clinic.  

Zauner spent 13 years in the NFL as a special teams coordinator. From 1994-2001 he worked for the Minnesota Vikings under head coach Dennis Green. He was the special teams coordinator for Brian Billick’s Baltimore Ravens from 2002-2005 and rejoined Green with the Arizona Cardinals in 2006. Zauner was also a consultant for eight different NFL teams during his career.

Zauner also has a strong college football coaching resume, working with special teams players at schools like BYU and San Diego State. For more information on Zauner’s career, including testimonials from NFL players he has worked with, visit www.coachzauner.com.

“It’s an honor to be asked by the bowl committee to hold a clinic,” Zauner said. “It will be a lot of fun. If there is anything I can do to help the Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game, I’m all for it.”

“Gary Zauner is a coaching legend and we are lucky to have him part of the Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game week,” Joe Dan Rogers, executive director of the game, said. “The college all-stars, and the fans watching, will be receiving instruction from an expert in kicking and special teams.”

The Tucson Padres front office staff is assisting the 2013 Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game operations. The game will be televised on the ESPN family of networks, including ESPN3 and WatchESPN.com. The game will be carried on radio on ESPN Tucson 1490 AM and 104.9 FM. Partners for the game include the Tucson Conquistadores, a charitable organization that supports youth in athletic programs throughout southern Arizona.
