signed NFL contracts and many more have been invited to many NFL and CFL mini-camps. To

date (23) of these specialists have now made NFL rosters and another (7) are playing in the CFL Canadian Football League.

Jeff Overbaugh San Diego State Snapper Perfect Career

First and for most I would like to congratulate Jeff Overbaugh

for his outstanding and 'Perfect' snapping career at San Diego State

In 1980 I was hired by Head Coach, Doug Scovil as the Special Teams Coach at San Diego State.  It was my first full time position and matter of fact I became the first Full-Time Special Teams Coach in NCAA history.  Most college football teams had their staffs coach the kicking game by committee or had a position coach organize their kicking game. I was hired just to coach Special Teams and the kicking specialists.  It was a First!

With that said, about three years ago I had a snapping camp here in Phoenix, Arizona and when Jeff Overbaugh introduced himself to me, all I could think about - An Aztec!  There was an instant bond!  

At the first practice I quickly noticed that this Aztec had some real snapping potential. The previous snapper at San Diego State, who was Aaron Brewer is now snapping for the Denver Broncos. So, San Diego State must be doing something right especially with long snappers.

In the past two years Jeff has worked hard not only becoming a better snapper but also working on his blocking technique and coverage skills.  I told him if he wants to be an NFL snapper he needs the full package.

At the present time San Diego State has a pretty good team and a possibility of a Bowl Game.  I wish the Aztec's and Jeff Overbaugh continued success and good luck in the future.  Go Aztecs!

After the season Jeff will be moving to Fountain Hills, Arizona to start training for his next opportunity either Coach Zauner's College Senior Combine or his PRO Day or Who Knows, Maybe More!

Australian Rules Punters Working To Get To NFL.

Coach Zauner's PROGRAMS Producing Results For Specialists!

In the last couple of months,  I have been contacted by two Australian Rules punters that are looking to not only get better but also get more exposure to NFL teams.  Sam Irwin-Hill, Australian rules punter from the University of Arkansas was the first to contact me.  Next, Paul Jones Australian rules punter from Arkansas State University.  

Two years ago Brad Wing came to Phoenix, Arizona and attended the PRO Development Camp in January to work and improve his punting technique.  Like Nick Novak (Chargers), Matt Overton (Colts), Brandon McManus (Denver Broncos), Brad Nortman (Panthers), Joe Cardona (NE Patriots), Morgan Cox (Ravens), Drew Butler (Cardinals), Kevin McDermott (Vikings) and Beau Brinkley all plus more have attended these camps looking to improve their Punting, Kicking or Snapping technique.

I have notice one thing about most Australian rules punters that have come to the United States and have played or are now playing college football. They all have natural foot skills, leg strength but most lack what I term a NFL punting technique. They can run and punt or punt on the run which is a part of their Australian rules football game but lack an, in the pocket NFL hang time punting technique. 

I firmly believe if most Australian rules punters were coached better on a NFL punting technique they would have a better chance of making the transition from the college game to the NFL.

In 1994 Darren Bennett came to San Diego looking to make the transition from Aussie Rules Football to the NFL. He received coaching and played in the 1995 NFL Europe Football League for one season.  He came back from Europe and in his first 1995 NFL Season with the San Diego Chargers, he was selected to the PRO Bowl.

Sam Irwin-Hill and Paul Jones both have selected another path.  Both men have been referred to me by other college specialists knowing they must get better and in need of more exposure to NFL teams.

One week after my 2014 College Senior Combine I host my 2014 Free Agent Combine. The

only difference is NFL Coaches, Scouts and Directors of College / Pro Scouting can attend

my Free Agent Combine but can not by NFL Rule attend any one's College Senior Combine, unless run by the NFL.  The likes of the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. 

That is why I run Coach Zauner's Free Agent Combine immediately after my College Senior Combine.  So, I can give all the (NFL) and (CFL) Canadian Football League Coaches and teams the results from the College Senior Combine plus hand deliver their Combine workout videos and give them my NFL potential recommendations to them. 

It is a system that has worked for the last several years for many College Seniors that did not receive the exposure they wanted, needed and deserved.  The likes of Punters:  Johnny Hekker (St. Louis Rams), Sam Martin (Detroit Lions) and Tress Way (Washington Redskins).  All three of these punters did not play in any after season Bowl Games or get an invite to the Senior Bowl, or NFL Combine.  They received my recommendation and endorsement that they had NFL Potential and should be strongly looked at and evaluated with the other top senior that did get invited to the NFL Combine.

That is why my recommendation early in "The Process" to all the NFL Special Teams Coaches is important.  So the NFL Coaches can find specialists that NFL Scouts missed on in the evaluation process. 

Coach Zauner's College Senior Combines Have Produces Results For These Punters:

So, after the 2014 Draft many of the specialists I recommended to NFL Coaches were invited to NFL Mini Camps and later signed NFL Contracts.  Every year there is a good number of specialists recommended. Many go to either NFL Training Camps or get invited to CFL Training Camps.  Most of the specialists get pre-season game experience and exposure.  However, all of them got cut at the end of 204 training camp season.  

Some did well enough in camps and pre-season games to sign Futures Contracts in 2015:  The list of Specialists signing futures contracts were:  Travis Coons and Carey Spear both with the (Cleveland Browns), Andrew Furney (New York Jets), Michael Palardy (St. Louis Rams) and Kasey Redfern (Jacksonville Jaguars). Congrats to all these Specialists.

Also, some specialists from the 2014 College Senior Combine Signed NFL Contracts and later signed

contracts with the (CFL) Canadian Football League in 2015.  Andy Wilder (Northern Arizona) signed with Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015 and later in the year signed with the (CFL) Ottawa RedBlacks.  Sergio Castillo (West Texas A&M) was an All-American Kicker and 2013 Fred Mitchell Award Winner signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2014 and this year signed with the (CFL) B.C. Lions.

A 13-year veteran or 23-year old rookie?

It sounds like a trick question. If you asked Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, he would undoubtedly choose the former…right?

Wrong.

When the defending NFC champs made their final roster cuts this August. Pro Bowl veteran Brian Jennings was out, UCLA alum Kevin McDermott was in.

In 2012, Kevin’s mom, Deborah McDermott came across Coach Zauner's name on a kicking blog and decided to do some digging.

"I gave Coach Zauner a "cold call", not revealing who I was or who my son was. He was recommended to us by several people and I knew how respected he was at the professional level. As a mom, you want to make sure your children are surrounded by good people… I had a very straight-forward conversation with Coach and felt he would have Kevin's best interest at heart."

In December, Kevin (and his mom) signed on for ONE on ONE Lessons.

With thirteen years of NFL coaching experience under his belt, Coach Zauner knows the tricks of the trade and what it takes to raise your game. During ONE on ONE Lessons, Coach was able to give Kevin his undivided attention and help him identify and improve his fundamentals and technique.

Encouraged by his first Coach Zauner program experience, Kevin started down “A Specialist’s Path to PRO Football”.  In January 2013, he attended the PRO Development Camp for Snappers and Punters and in March the College Senior Specialist's Combine and in his own words, described his experience.

“I came to the PRO Development Camp in January to get used to competing with other snappers at a combine and this weekend has been very good for me. I've been able to show off my talents and Coach Zauner is respected in the NFL and Canadian Football League and there's nobody out there better to help me reach my goal of making it to the NFL."

Kevin’s countless hours of hard work paid off big this past summer when Kevin was picked up by the San Francisco 49ers. He signed on with the team, but he would still have to earn his roster spot. 

Just like at the College Senior Specialist's Combine and the PRO Development Camp, Kevin would have to make himself stand out. Only this time, it was against a Pro Bowl veteran, Brian Jennings.

The odds may have been stacked against him, but Kevin McDermott was ready. He trusted his training and his talents and he switched his game into high gear.

Deborah McDermott recalled the wave of emotions she experienced watching everything play out, from the day Kevin committed himself to a career in the NFL to the moment he officially became a San Francisco 49er.

"I don't think my husband and I really understood the value of Kevin's long snapping abilities until his senior year of high school. A coach brought it to our attention and as soon as Kevin committed to pursuing this at the next level, I watched how dedicated and focused he became. It's incredibly rewarding to be a part of his transition from high school to college to the 49ers. We couldn't be prouder."

Kevin’s path to the next level is unique and without his determination to succeed , it may not have been possible.
