Matt Gay (Utah) and Jace Christmann (Mississippi State)

Coach Zauner's ONE on ONE Kicking Lessons Produce Results for Soccer Players.

Coach Zauner Teaches 'A Natural Style of Kicking and Punting'

Jace Christmann and Matt Gay - ONE on ONE Coach Zauner Students
About five years ago I first met Jace Christmann and in April of 2017 I met Matt Gay.  Both of these young men were excellent soccer players in high school.  Both wanted to be football kickers.

Jace was a freshman at Houston Memorial High School in Houston Texas and Matt was a junior at Utah Valley University playing on the soccer team.

Coach Zauner a former NFL Special Team Coach with the Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals and current kicking consultant is known for his philosophy of teaching and coaching a 'Natural Style of Kicking and Punting'.

Jace Christmann During A ONE on ONE Kicking Lesson With Coach Zauner
During his 40 plus years as a coach and consultant  he has now coached, consulted and trained over 120 plus NFL and CFL kicking, punting and snapping specialists, including 25 PRO Bowlers.

Today as a kicking consultant I really enjoy working with young men at any level.  It doesn't matter if their high school, college, free agent or  professional specialists as long as they are looking to get better.  As a teacher and coach my gratification comes from the improvement and success my students or players achieve.

Matt Gay and Jace Christmann are a perfect examples of ONE on ONE students that have put a big smile on my face because of their success so far this year.  These two soccer players have embraced Coach Zauner's Natural Style of Kicking.

Matt was a walk-on this year at the University of Utah for Head Coach Kyle Whittingham and is presently after three games 11 for 11 or 100% on his field goal attempts.

Jace was a preferred walk-on last year at Mississippi State for Head Coach Dan Mullen.  Jace for the last month was in a battle with three other kickers for the starting spot.  He started 4th on the depth chart the opening week of training camp.

He has worded hard and moved up the depth chart each week.  He has stayed confident and matured each week as a person and player.  He has competed, stayed focused and believed in his technique.

This past weekend Jace got his first start against LSU.  I am happy to say Jace was 3 for 3 on his field goal attempts and perfect on extra points.

Congrats to both Jace Christmann and Matt Gay for their success so far this season.

Hayden Hunt (Colorado State) Ray Guy Finalist

Ray Guy Finalists - Hayden Hunt Colorado State 46.3 Yard Average
First of all I would like to congratulate Hayden Hunt for being a Ray Guy Finalist.  Also, for his 2015 punting accomplishments.  To date his gross punting average is an impressive 46.3 yards per punt but more importantly his net punting average is 43.41 yards per punt.  He has also placed 21 of his 43 punts inside the 20 yard line in addition to 15 fair catches.

As a "traditional punter" or NFL Style punter goes, those are great numbers.  I use the term "traditional punter" because many of today's college coaches are having their punters use a running punt or Rugby style of punting.  It works in college football but won't work in the NFL because of the coverage rules.

In college when the ball is snapped everyone can release.  So the running style rugby punt gives the coverage team a little more time to get down field and give them great coverage.  In the NFL the only two players that can release on the snap are the outside two gunners.
Hayden Hunt Working To Become a More Consistent Punter
In January of 2015 I first met and worked ONE on ONE Kicking Lessons with Hayden's former teammate Jared Roberts.  Jared was invited to the NFL Combine last season but did not make any NFL training camp.

Jared brought Hayden to my July Kicking, Punting and Snapping Camp in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this past summer.  At the first practice Hayden hit some excellent hang time punts and I could tell this young man had potential.

I also noticed that Hayden needed to work to perfect a more consistent drop.  The key for most NFL punters is their drop.  During the course of the camp Hayden was a real sponge soaking up and trying to learn as much as he could.

Hayden who was originally a kicker converted to punting earlier in his college career so he could get some playing time. Well, sometimes things happen in life for a reason.  Hayden's making the most of his opportunities.
Coach Zauner Shows Hayden The Lever Drop Technique
At the camp this summer Hayden won a couple awards one being the longest punt and the other was best hang time punt.  His snapper was Mississippi State's senior long snapper, Winston Chapman.

It's always fun and gratifying to see young men like Hayden come to a camp or lessons and see them improve or take their games to the next level.  There are no more Sunday game days for Coach Zauner. So, I get my kicks from seeing my students or campers improve or make it on a college or  NFL team.

Once again I wish Hayden Hunt the best of luck next week when they make the final decision on the 2015 Ray Guy Award Winner.

Sergio Castillo All American Kicker, Wins Fred Mitchell Award

West Texas AM Kicker, Sergio Castillo Wins Fred Mitchell Award
I first met Sergio Castillo, Jr. in 2010 when he came to Scottsdale, Arizona for a One on One Kicking Lesson.  Since that time he has come back almost every year for addiitonal kicking lessons to improve his technique and also to attend the PRO Development Camps to get competition.

I am proud to announce Sergio is the recipient of the 2013 Fred Mitchell Award. The Award is provided to the nation’s top place-kicker in FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA for excellence on the football field and in the community. Over 750 place-kickers are eligible.

The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the All-American place-kicker from Wittenberg University and longtime sports columnist for the Chicago Tribune. Mitchell said, “It is a thrill to congratulate Sergio as the first Division II kicker to receive the Fred Mitchell Award. With more than 750 place-kickers to choose from, we are extremely proud to recognize Sergio among a stellar group of nominees. Sergio’s record-setting season and career are very impressive. He led the Buffs in scoring while playing a key role in the team’s successful playoff run and 11-3 record. He is a very accurate kicker, having made 62 of 79 career field goals and 251 of 255 extra points. Sergio has focused his community service efforts on mentoring young people.

Sergio volunteers weekly in the Students in Free Enterprise program to assist troubled youth with math, life lessons, college planning and job interviews.  He is a regular speaker in Amarillo in the Step Up to Success program, where he counsels high school and middle school students.  As a Toys for Juarez volunteer, he collects and distributes toys to children in Juarez, Mexico. He is a Huddle Leader, member of the football team’s Bible study and Fellowship of Christian Athletes member.

As you can see from the photos below Sergio started One on One Kicking Lessons with the typical head back and crunching style of kicking which is coached by many kicking coaches around the country.
Starting Technique at First One on One Lesson
Sergio has now adopted Coach Zauner's Natural Style of Kicking and Punting in which the torso stays more upright so he can kick and punt up and through the ball much easier.

Since 2010 Sergio has continually improved and matured as a person and kicker.  His mother has supported him in every way possible. Saving money for kicking lessons and kicking camps so her son could be the best he can be.
Sergio at 2012 May PRO Development Camp
As a teacher and kicking coach I must say that Sergio Castillo was very coachable and a quick study.  He picked up the Natural Style of Kicking and Punting quickly and worked hard to master it.  His college stats and record speak for itself.

I want to commend Sergio Castillo for his hard work in the past four years and congratulate him on his recent accomplishment as a First Team All American Place Kicker and now winning the 2013 Fred Mitchell Award. As a parent his mother must be very proud. Way to go Sergio!

Sergio will be honored on February 17, 2014 during the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony.

Coach Zauner's 2013 College Senior Combine a Success For Players and NFL Teams

College Senior Combine Produces Exposure & Results
Coach Zauner's College Senior Combine - March in Gilbert, Arizona
This year’s College Senior Kicking Combine was a roaring success with 13 of 74 participants signing NFL contracts this offseason.
Coach Zauner Meeting with Specialists to Organize the Next Days Schedule
College Senior Combine attendees were personally selected and invited to attend a three-day combine that would prove to be a launching pad to over a dozen student-athletes.

Under sunny skies in Gilbert, Arizona, the top specialists put their skills to the test in an effort to prove themselves worthy of playing at the next level. Through a series of skills tests and assessments, each specialist was evaluated by Coach Zauner to find out if he truly has NFL potential.  Each participant is given a DVD of his testing at the end of the combine.

Coach Zauner then sends the final results of the combine to every NFL team.  Also, a DVD of the specialists that Coach endorses to have NFL potential gets sent to every NFL Special Teams Coordinator and is posted on YouTube to get maximum exposure.

Coach Zauner’s College Senior Combine offers a unique opportunity to compete against the country’s elite kickers, punters and snappers while preparing for the pressure and spotlight of future tryouts. Using his years of PRO coaching experience, Coach Zauner separates the specialists into three groups to determine their NFL/CFL readiness.

Group 1: Ready to play at the next level (NFL, CFL)

Group 2: Have potential to play at the next level (NFL, CFL) with minor improvements

Group 3: Would have a difficult time making a roster at the next level.

Too often, athletes are unaware of or inaccurately assess their own skill level. The College Senior Combine is a way for specialists to gauge their true potential and receive genuine feedback by someone who is well-respected in PRO coaching circles.

Following the 2013 College Senior Combine, the following athletes received NFL contracts or attended training camps in the league:
These results are extremely promising for the entire Coach Zauner family and we are proud to have had any part in the incredible successes of the College Senior Combine participants.

Whether you’ve attended camps and combines before and are looking for something different or have yet to see where your skills match up with the top specialists in the country, if your a graduating senior the College Senior Kicking Combine is the place to find out if you’re ready for the ‘Specialists Path to PRO Football’.

Note:  Of the 13 Kicking Specialists to sign NFL Contracts and go to training camp, two made NFL teams Final Rosters.  Punter, Sam Martin (Appalachian State) & Snapper, Kevin McDermott (UCLA).

Brandon Bogotay From College Back Up To NFL Starter?

Brandon Bogotay Back Up Kicker at U. of Georgia Behind Blair Walsh Signs
Free Agent Contract with Cleveland Browns After 2013 Free Agent Combine
On March 26, 2013 I held my 2013 Free Agent Combine in Phoenix, Arizona.  A week or so later
Brandon Bogotay a Free Agent Kicker from the University of Georgia had two workouts lined up with the Seattle Seahawks and the Cleveland Browns.

After excellent workouts both teams offered Brandon a Free Agent Contract.

Cleveland was so impressed with Brandon's 2013 Free Agent Combine and private workouts they offered him a highly unlikely signing bonus.

When Brandon asked me what he should do I replied, "Make decisions based upon opportunity and not money."

Brandon was flattered with the signing bonus but made his decision based upon where he felt his best chances of being the starting Kicker.  And that would be in Cleveland.

In May I wrote a blog about Brandon Bogotay and 'A Speciaist's Path To Pro Football'.  Click To Read Brandon's Blog.

Chris Tabor (Cleveland Browns) and Shawn Slocum (Green Bay Packers)

Now, in August Cleveland Sports writers are writing articles about Brandon and his quest to be Cleveland's starting kicker.  Brandon in his first start had a good game kicking a 43 yard field goal and putting his first two kickoffs out of the end zone.  Brandon tweaked his groin on one of his kickoffs and the team decided to sit him out the rest of the game.
