This Year I Was A Very, Very, Very Happy Teacher and Coach!

Throughout my 40+ coaching career, I have now coached, consulted and trained 120 plus NFL and CFL kicking specialists, including 25 PRO Bowlers. And these numbers are increasing every year.

This was a very good year for Coach Zauner's Programs.  After coaching 11 years in college at BYU, San Diego State, University of New Mexico and Long Beach State and another 13 years in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals I decided to go back into my Snapping, Punting and Kicking Consulting Business. 

Since 2007 I have been doing ONE on ONE Snapping, Punting and Kicking Lessons for high school, college, free agent and professional specialists.  I also offer PRO Development Camps in January and May in Arizona and July in Wisconsin for all levels of kicking specialists.

A big part of Coach Zauner's Programs and NFL Networking are the College Senior Combine in February and the Free Agent Combine in March.  Both are producing results for NFL and CFL Teams and all the specialists attending.

In December I first learned that one of my prize ONE on ONE students, Jace Christmann (Mississippi State) was honored by receiving the SEC All Freshman Award followed with a 2018 Freshman All-American Award.   Congrats to Jace!  He was a walk-on kicker that deserves to be rewarded with a scholarship!

In August I learned another ONE on ONE Kicker and walk-on at the University of Utah had made the roster.  In September became the starter and in December won the Lou Groza Award.  What a story that was.  Congrats to Matthew Gay for his unbelievable achievement.  As a walk-on he also deserves a scholarship.

After the 2017 football season in late December the post season Bowl Games invites went out.  It was a great year for Snappers.  

In the last 9 years Coach Zauner's Snapping Programs have produced 25 Snappers on NFL and CFL rosters.  This is probably a result of many of these snappers come to Arizona for ONE on ONE Snapping Lessons, attend my Snappers ONLY 'Vital Man' Training Camps and then participate in either of my College Senior or Free Agent Combines.

First Tanner Carew Called me in late November to inform me of his invite to the 2018 Reese's Senior Bowl. Next, Jake Wirsching (Bemidji State) was selected for the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.  Then Ike Powell was selected to the Senior Bowl.  Finally, Hunter Bradley was invited to the East / West Shrine Bowl.  Congrats to all the snappers for their hard work throughout their careers and getting well deserved Bowl Game invites.

In January of 2018 came the NFL Playoff Games. Three of the Snappers playing in the Semi-Final Games had all attended my PRO Development Camps for Specialists.  Now, I have re-named those Camps to Coach Zauner's Snapper's ONLY 'Vital Man' Training Camps.  More geared to Snappers that have a Dream to play in the NFL someday. 

I'm proud to say I worked many ONE on ONE Snapping Lessons with Jeff Overbaugh (San Diego State) and Rick Lovato (Old Dominion) for years. I hope I played a small part in their success during their careers.  Below is a great picture of the two snappers after their playoff game.

So, after looking at everything that happened this year and all the awards have come out, I am very  Happy with the impact Coach Zauner's Programs are having in todays Kicking World.

Coach Zauner Asks "Why Coach?"

'A Natural Style of Kicking and Punting'
Prove A Rewarding Experience for NFL Kicker.

In 2010, Josh Scobee came to me for a One on One Kicking Lesson to improve and refine his kicking technique. As Josh continued to visit Phoenix for more One on One Lessons over the next two years, he returned to Jacksonville each time with more and more confidence in himself and his kicking technique.

Ultimately, Josh's performance on the field spoke for how dedicated he was to not only making himself a better kicker, but to being one of the best kickers in the entire NFL.

Josh's contract then expired after the 2011 season. Unfortunately, the NFL is a business, and contract negotiations may not always work out the way that either party plans. Because an agreement couldn't be reached, the only way that the Jaguars could guarantee that they at least kept their star kicker for at least another year was to place the 'franchise tag' on him. This meant that Josh would only get a one year deal.

Josh then took to his twitter account to show his disapproval of the 'franchise tag' on NFL players as well as his goal of a long term deal, but he understands the nature of the business. I told him to just continue his training and level of play and the deal would eventually come.

Then, a couple of days before the 2012 NFL Training Camp schedule opened, I received a phone call from Josh thanking me for being a part of his success the past two seasons and how happy him and his wife were. Josh had just finalized his new contract and the team had removed the franchise tag to give Josh the four year contract that he well deserved.

I thought to myself, "What a thoughtful gesture and what a classy Professional Athlete." Not only is Josh a professional in every way, but most importantly he is a fine gentleman with character.  It's gestures like this that keep me coaching now, but it was the young students and athletes early in my career that started me teaching and coaching and got me to this point in my career. 

I am always happiest when I am in the classroom teaching or on the field as a kicking coach.

After retiring from coaching in the NFL, my wife and I decided I needed to find something to keep me busy.  Starting Coach Zauner, LLC and giving One on One Kicking, Punting and Snapping Lessons was the beginning.  Michelle and I had a website created to promote my services as a kicking coach and consultant. This website www.coachzauner.com is filled with free video for young kicking specialists to view of many of the NFL veteran kicking, punting and snapping specialists I had coached or consulted early in my coaching and consulting career.

Coach Zauner, LLC grew rapidly.  Lessons, referrals, Free Agent Contracts, calls from NFL Head Coaches, Special Teams Coordinators and Scouts.  Several NFL, UFL and CFL teams use my consulting services.  As a matter of fact, when the new UFL Football League open a couple of years ago, 13 of the 15 kicking specialists had attended one of Coach Zauner's programs.

From One on One Kicking, Punting and Snapping Lessons we developed Coach Zauner's Free Agent and College Senior Specialist's Combine.  The success of the two combines led to the four PRO Development Camps held January, May and July in Arizona and Wisconsin. 

Recently, in June of 2012, I was hired as a consultant by EASports for their 2014 John Madden NFL and NCAA Football Video Games as a special teams and kicking game consultant. It was a good and fun experience and can only hope it may eventually turn out to be a interesting and rewarding relationship in years to come. 

Four years ago, I complained that the phone wasn't ringing enough.  Now, I complain that the phone is ringing too often and I don't have any free time for golf or relaxing.  I guess that's just human nature.  However, I have decided to just keep complaining but enjoy the success of the business Michelle and I have built.  

Every year in June and July I spend six weeks back home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin giving One on One Lesson and doing my July PRO Development Camp.  It turned out to be a record month for One on One Lessons and kicking specialists attending my PRO Camps. 

Last week when my 88 year old mother, Thelma, asked me, "When are you going to retire?"  I replied, "Mom I don't really feel like what I do is work.  It's fun and rewarding.  Besides, if I didn't work I would probably drive Michelle crazy being home too often!

Since I started Coach Zauner, LLC, I have had the opportunity to travel the country to help spread my football knowledge, such as private consulting and coaching jobs, a visit to the University of Alabama as a guest speaker, consulting special teams for the NCAA and Madden 2014 video games for EA Sports. So I asked myself again, why coach? The answer is easy. It's the special relationships that I have developed with so many fine people involved in the game of football that keep me motivated to coach long after I thought I would retire, and its done nothing but bring joy to my life.

Is Producing Results in NFL The Last Four Years

When I retired from coaching special teams in the NFL, it was still evident to me that the urge to coach was still in the bottom of my heart. Most of my life, I had coached the traditional soccer style kicking, however I then began to notice a big difference between more 'mechanical' kickers and 'natural' kickers. Because the best NFL kickers seemed to be more 'natural', it was then I decided I wanted to instill my philosophy of 'A Natural Style of Kicking' to not only specialists in the NFL, but to all kicking specialists.

After a year into coaching One on One Lessons, in 2009, Coach Zauner, LLC began to truly evolve into 'A Specialist's Path to PRO Football' as we started to offer our PRO Development Camp Program as well as the Free Agent Specialist's Combine. The success of the Free Agent Combine prompted me to introduce the College Senior Specialist's Combine to help college seniors who are not invited to the NFL combine gain more deserved exposure to NFL teams.

After doing some research, I am proud to say that not only have several NFL Veterans embraced and utilized Coach Zauner Programs such as One on One Lessons and the Free Agent Combines, but young aspiring specialists are also seeing results as well.

To date, 37 of 144 specialists on current NFL Training Camp Rosters fighting for positions have participated in Coach Zauner Programs. That's 25% of the NFL! 

Of the 37 specialists, 15 of those are NFL veterans such as Josh Scobee (One on One Lessons), Sebastian Janikowski (One on One Lessons), Billy Cundiff (One on One Lessons and Free Agent Combine), Rian Lindell ( One on One Lessons), Shayne Graham (One on One and Free Agent Combine) and Nick Novak (One on One, Free Agent Combine and PDC). 

Scobee, who has continued his One on One Lessons for 3 years, recently had his best season kicking a career high 92% as well as tying an NFL record for the most 50 yard field goals in a single game. After Janikowski attended One on One Lessons to improve on long field goals, he elevated his game from kicking at 71% in 2008 to an average of 84% over the next four years with a high of 89% in 2009, including a NFL record tying 63 yard field goal!

Several free agent kicking specialists have also been a part of our Free Agent Combines, One on One Lessons or PRO Development Camps such as Nick Novak (Chargers), Tom Malone and Garrett Lindholm (Rams), Will Batson (Titans), Matt Overton (Colts), Derek Chard (Jets), Chris Koepplin (Patriots), Ricky Schmitt (Cardinals) and Jeff Wolfert (Browns).

NFL rookies also have benefitted this year through our College Senior Specialist's Combine as well as our specified NFL Combine training. Of the nine specialists in the 2012 NFL Combine, five of them have worked extensively with Coach Zauner, LLC in Brad Nortman (5 years), Drew Butler (4 years), Randy Bullock (3 years), Kyle Martens (2 years), while Carson Wiggs attended One on One Combine Training lessons.

Randy and Brad were also selected in 5th and 6th rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft!

The 2012 College Senior Combine was our most successful to date with seven participating specialists signing NFL contracts, five specialists with tryouts in the NFL, and not to mention Western Michigan kicker John Potter being selected by the Buffalo Bills in 7th round of the 2012 NFL Draft! In past years, the College Senior Combine has also helped gain exposure to current NFL players such as, Morgan Cox (Ravens), Justin Drescher (Saints), Christian Yount (Browns), and Travis Baltz (Jets).

To break down the numbers more, of the current 37 specialists in the NFL who have trained with Coach Zauner, LLC, 28 have participated in One on One Lessons, 11 have been showcased at the Free Agent Combine, while 14 participated in the College Senior Combine and 11 have been a part of our PRO Development Camps.

It is important to also note that there are several deserving specialists I have worked with that are currently searching for a team or have been on NFL rosters. Playing professional football is not an overnight process and it takes hard work, dedication, skill and perhaps most importantly, patience. It truly is 'A Specialist's Path to Pro Football' and Coach Zauner, LLC has proven it can help on that path.

As proud as I am about having coached in the NFL and helping young men on 'A Specialist's Path to PRO Football', the philosophy of that phrase has much more meaning to it than just playing in the NFL. I truly feel that in whatever you pursue in life, you should always strive to be the best that you can be. I know that it is a privilege and very difficult to play in the NFL, let alone be lucky enough to sustain a long career. My ultimate goal is to give specialist's the best opportunity to succeed by taking their game to the next level and achieve their highest potential.
