Shane Phillips a 6'2 218 lb. Australian Punter who attended Alcorn State and is now a Free Agent has earned a workout with the Minnesota Vikings next Thursday, June 19th at the Vikings Training Facility.
Shane came to me in March for some One on One Lessons and was a very raw punter with a strong leg. Shane lacked certain fundamentals in my opinion which subsequently caused him to be inconsistent.
As Shane kept working hard on the drills I gave him to improve his fundamentals, he got better and better. After about four lessons and a lot of hard work, Shane went to Louie Aguair's Kicking Workout Camp in Dallas and was rated the #1 punter after a couple days of competition.
The day all the NFL Special Teams Coaches and Scouts were there to evaluate the talent a storm blew in. Shane was the first punter up, and this storm with torrential town pour of rain came in and the temperatures dropped quickly. As they continued the workout Shane was getting ready to hit some open field punts and popped his hamstring. "Sniper"
Several of the Special Teams Coaches I spoke to said it was an unbelievable storm.
It was extremely unfortunate for Shane, because he was punting the football the best he had ever punted in his life. He was now unable to punt for several weeks.
When Shane healed, he came back to Scottsdale to train with me. After a couple more One on One Punting Lessons he was booming the ball with consistency. He was now an NFL punting candidate in my mind and his punting video was posted on the website.
Shane's agent, Scott Smith made a lot of calls to teams and finally Shane is getting his first workout with an NFL team.
I am very happy for Shane because this kid took his life savings when he left Australia and is chasing a dream. He has had some highs and lows but has stayed the course and his hard work is finally going to pay dividends.
